The shepherd’s roles of guiding the flock to parts of righteousness

Another major task of the shepherd is leadership. The sheep by nature are without a sense of direction. They totally depend on the leadership of their shepherd. So leading the sheep especially to where they will find food, shelter, water which will result to their satisfaction and the restoration of their souls is utterly the task of the shepherd.

In contemporary pastoral ministry today, leadership is one of the key functions of the pastor. Massaquoi observes that “sheep often do not have a vision for what God is doing in their lives or what God can do through their lives. The shepherd needs to come alongside and provide leadership and vision for what God can do in and through the sheep. Tending the sheep (John 21:16) goes beyond feeding and would include guidance as an important aspect.” (Massaquoi, 2014: 148).
