Decision making is the process of making a choice by identifying a decision, gathering information and assessing alternative resolution.

Using a step by step decision masking process can help you make more deliberate, thoughtful decision by organizing relevant information and defining alternatives.  The following are 5 steps that will help you come out with a good decision-

Step 1. Identify the Decision

You realize that you need to make a decision. Try to clearly define the nature of the decision you want to make. This step one is very important.

Step 2. Gather relevant information 

Take your time to collect as many pertinent information as possible, before making your decision. This step involve both internal and external work. Some information is internal while others are externally sourced.

Step 3. Identify the Alternatives

Are there alternatives to the end decision you want to make? List all the desirable and possibles alternatives and clearly study them. Both the pros and cons should also be considered.

Step 4. Weigh the Evidence.

Draw your information and emotions to imagine what it would be like if you carry out each of the alternatives to the end. Evaluate whether the need  identified in step 1 would be met or resolved through the use of each alternatives.

Step 5. Choose among Alternatives

Once you have weighed all the alternatives, you are ready to select the best alternative.You may even choose a combination of alternatives.

Step 6. Take Action.

You are now ready to take some positive action by beginning to implement the alternative selected in step 5.

Step 7. Review your Decision and its Consequences.

In this final step, consider the result of your decision and resolved whether or not it has solved the need you identified in step 1. If the decision has not met the need, you may want to repeat  certain steps of the process to make a new decision.
